Preparing your motorcycle for winter requires a few smart steps. Cold air, moisture and long periods of inactivity can cause damage if you leave everything as it is. With the right approach you can store your bike clean, dry and protected for the entire season. Discover how to do it.
Battery
Cold temperatures place extra strain on a motorcycle battery. If your bike is stored indoors in a space that stays above freezing, you can keep the battery installed and connect it to a trickle charger. This keeps the voltage stable and prevents slow discharge.
If your motorcycle will be stored outside or in a location that may freeze, remove the battery and keep it indoors at a steady temperature above ten degrees Celsius. You can connect it to a trickle charger there so it stays topped up throughout winter.
Fuel tank
Condensation inside the tank can cause rust. Fill the tank completely before storing your motorcycle. A fuel stabiliser helps keep the petrol in good condition during long periods of inactivity.
Chain
Give the chain a fresh layer of chain spray before storage. This protects the metal against moisture during winter.
Tyres
A motorcycle that sits for months can develop flat spots. If you have a centre stand or paddock stand, place the bike on it so the tyres are off the ground. If not, increase tyre pressure to around three bar. Moving the bike a little from time to time also helps.
Preventing rust
A light coat of silicone spray or a mild lubricant protects metal parts from moisture. Focus on the engine, exhaust, suspension, frame, swingarm and wheels. Lubricate cables, plugs and electrical contact points as well so they stay smooth. Avoid spraying the brake discs because this reduces braking performance.
Take action
These steps help your motorcycle stay in good condition throughout winter. Once the first dry spring day arrives, you can ride off without any hassle. Looking for more maintenance tips? Have a look at our blog and get your motorcycle ready for the new season.
