Riding a motorcycle in winter requires proper preparation and a few important checks. Some riders are not easily discouraged by cold weather. We share five practical tips to help you keep riding through the winter months.
1. Protect your motorcycle
Spray your motorcycle with a corrosion protector. You can also use a silicone spray, but make sure it is a thicker variant. Apply it when the bike is dry and preferably before road salt appears on the streets.
After riding on winter roads, it is best to rinse the motorcycle thoroughly with cold water and reapply the spray. Always wait until the engine has cooled down, otherwise the salt may be pushed further into the metal.
2. Use a trickle charger
Connect your motorcycle to a trickle charger overnight. This helps prevent starting problems in the morning.
3. Check your lighting
Inspect your lights regularly. You will likely leave home in the dark and return in the dark as well. Being clearly visible is especially important during winter.
4. Check your tyres
Check tyre pressure and tread condition frequently. Winter tyres do exist for motorcycles, but they are not as advanced as the winter tyres used on cars.
5. Dress for the conditions
Wear proper winter gear such as thermal base layers and winter gloves. Few things ruin a ride faster than cold hands or numb body parts.
Comfortable riding, even in winter
By following these tips, winter rides become more manageable and enjoyable. Keeping both your motorcycle and your gear in good condition helps avoid unnecessary issues on the road. Want to explore more? Take a look at our blog.
