Helmet Closures
For motorcycle and scooter helmets, there are different types of closures. Each of these closures has its advantages and disadvantages. The two types of chin strap fastening systems that are most commonly used are the quick release and the double-D buckle. We will explain them to you.
Double D Fastening:
The double D fastening is the simplest and most reliable fastening. Using two steel rings through which you pull the strap, this fastening tightens when under tension. Initially, it may be difficult to operate the fastening, but after a few days, you get used to it and often don't want any other type of fastening. A double-D chinstrap is tightened every time you put on the helmet. This way, you never risk your chin strap being too loose.
The double D fastening is very simple and therefore also the safest, as it cannot wear down or come loose. It is no coincidence that this type of fastening is mandatory in racing. Most high-end helmets thus have a double D fastening. This is not to save money by using a simple mechanism, but for ultimate safety.
Quick Release
The most common helmet fastening is the quick release. Quick release systems have a mechanism that clicks into place and is very reliable, using a metal or plastic microlock. This fastening is the easiest to operate (even with gloves) and is the most common on current helmets.
Unfortunately, a quick release is not allowed in racing, as there is a possibility that the mechanism can come loose on impact. If you want to ride on the track, you will need to buy a helmet with a double D fastening or have your quick release replaced with a double D fastening.
