Waterproofing Motorcycle Clothing
Waterproofing motorcycle clothing can be done in several ways. Each method works differently and affects comfort, weight, and drying time. Below you will read how the three common systems work and who they are suitable for.
Waterproof membrane behind the outer layer
Many motorcycle clothes use a waterproof membrane that sits behind the outer layer of the jacket or pants. Rain first passes through the outer fabric and is then blocked behind it. This keeps you dry, although the outer layer can get wet.
This construction is relatively inexpensive and functional. Therefore, this type of clothing is popular with riders who mainly go on short trips or do not want to spend a large budget. The disadvantage is that the clothing is less breathable in warm weather and can feel clammy more quickly.
This system often comes with a removable thermal lining. This makes the clothing suitable for multiple seasons. That is why it is also called 2-layer motorcycle clothing.
Removable waterproof membrane and thermal lining
There is also clothing where both the waterproof membrane and the thermal lining can be taken out of the jacket or pants with zippers. You can therefore adjust each layer to the moment, from a wet autumn day to a summer ride. This is called 3-layer motorcycle clothing.
3-layer motorcycle clothing is ideal for riders who commute a lot or regularly go on motorcycle holidays. The price is higher, but the system is versatile and practical in use.
Direct laminate membrane
Direct laminate is the most modern form of waterproof motorcycle clothing. Here, the waterproof membrane is applied directly to the outer layer. The two layers form one unit. Where the seams are, the membrane is finished with waterproof tape so that no water can get through. The difference with a traditional membrane is explained in the image below.
Advantages of direct laminate
With direct laminate, water does not first pass through the outer layer. The fabric cannot get soaked. This has the following advantages:
- the fabric does not absorb water
- the clothing remains light, even after longer rain showers
- the outer layer dries quickly after a ride
- it doesn't feel cold or heavy while riding
- ready to use immediately for the next ride
Different types of direct laminate
Direct laminate is applied in motorcycle clothing in two ways:
Gore Tex is a specialized company that only develops and tests membranes. Due to their strict quality standards, they offer a lifetime guarantee on waterproofing. Examples of jackets with a Gore Tex laminate are the Rukka Energator and various touring jackets from brands such as Rev'it and Alpinestars.
Hydratex and Raintex are alternatives that many motorcyclists find comfortable and reliable. They are used in jackets like the Rev'it Dayton and various Macna models.
