Fitting Motorcycle Helmets
Which fit of a motorcycle helmet do you have? When does a helmet fit well? And what should you pay attention to when fitting a motorcycle helmet? We give you the answers.
The Importance of a Proper Helmet
A well-fitting and correct helmet for your motorcycle is essential for your riding pleasure and safety. A helmet that is too small will give you a headache while riding. A helmet that is too large makes you feel like it could shoot off during the ride, especially on the highway. The strap will press annoyingly against your throat or lower jaw because this strap is the only thing keeping the helmet from being pulled off your head by air resistance. And when you turn your head to look sideways while overtaking and merging, you feel like your helmet will turn a quarter and you won't see anything anymore. This can also cause unpleasant situations if the helmet slips off your head in an accident.
Fit of a Motorcycle Helmet
There are three types of fits: oval, oval-round, and round. It is important to consider your fit first before focusing solely on the looks. Which fit suits your head best is a matter of trying on and measuring.

Helmet manufacturers make helmets based on molds. Each brand does this in its way, resulting in various fits.
- Round: Caberg, Nolan, X-Lite, GPA, Nau
- Oval round: Arai, Bell, Beon, Biltwell, LS2, MT, Nau, Nexx, Nolan, Premier, Schuberth, Scorpion, Shark, Shoei, Simpson, Vito, X-Lite
- Oval: AGV, Held, HJC, Scorpion, Shark, Simpson
Note: the fit may vary per model (of the same brand).
Trying on the Helmet
We recommend always trying on a helmet before riding with it. An Arai helmet can fit differently than an HJC, even though they might both be size S. This can be due to a different outer shell shape or inner lining.
- First, choose a helmet in a size that matches your fit and head size. Check out our handy tips for measuring your helmet size.
- Try to push a finger between your forehead and the helmet. This shouldn't happen. If it does, the helmet is too large. Try pushing against the back of your helmet and push with your head. Now you should be able to fit a finger between your helmet and forehead.
- Shake your head 'no.' Your helmet should not slide over your head. Your scalp should move with the lining of the helmet.
- Keep the helmet on for a while. You'll quickly notice if you'll get a headache if the helmet is too small. But remember: your helmet should feel snug.
Trying on the Helmet with Glasses
If you wear glasses, it's wise to try putting them on without issues. Keep them on for a while to see if it becomes uncomfortable. Your glasses should rest on your nose and not hang in the helmet.
When Does a Helmet Fit Well?
In general, a helmet should fit snugly. You can't compare it with your current helmet, as the lining could already be pressed in from frequent use. Your new helmet will not feel as comfortable as your current one. But don't worry: the lining will shape to your head, making it as comfortable after you've ridden with your new helmet for a while.
The helmet should not be so tight that you feel you'll get a headache after a few minutes of wearing it. You should also not feel pressure or pinching points, especially not on your forehead. The pressure from the outer shell should be even everywhere: as if you're wearing a tight balaclava.
Shoei Personal Fitting
If you really can't figure it out, there's another solution, namely Shoei Personal Fitting. This is a system by Shoei where the inner lining of a helmet is adjusted to your head. By measuring the length, width, height, and circumference, a computer system calculates what needs to be adjusted. The result is a perfectly fitting helmet.
