A common misconception among riders is: “I’ll just wear a pair of sturdy shoes. They’re safe enough and much more comfortable to walk in.” In reality, regular shoes are not designed to protect your feet and ankles on a motorcycle. 1. Touring boots

Touring boots are the most versatile option and are available from around €100. They are suitable for commuting as well as longer touring rides. Most models combine leather with abrasion resistant textiles, offering a good balance between comfort and protection.

To keep your feet dry, touring boots are often equipped with a waterproof and breathable membrane such as Raintex, Gore-Tex or OutDry. Reinforced toe boxes, heel protection and ankle armour come as standard, while zip closures make them easy to put on and take off.

2. Racing boots

Essential for track days and popular among sporty riders, racing boots offer the highest level of support and protection. The tall boot shaft wraps tightly around the calf and multiple buckles or closures help create a secure fit.

Many racing boots feature an ankle brace system that reduces the risk of twisting or injuring the ankle. The trade off is reduced walking comfort. Most race boots also include replaceable toe sliders and hard protective panels for additional protection during aggressive riding. Waterproofing is rarely a priority in this category.

3. Adventure boots

Adventure riding continues to grow in popularity and manufacturers have responded with a wide range of adventure boots. These boots are taller, waterproof and built to handle challenging terrain.

Their rugged soles feature deep tread patterns for grip on loose surfaces, while the overall construction provides strong support and protection. At the same time, they remain flexible enough for standing on the pegs and moving comfortably off road.

4. Motorcycle sneakers

Prefer shoes over boots? Motorcycle sneakers are a popular choice. They offer comfort close to that of everyday footwear while adding motorcycle specific protection.

Most motorcycle sneakers include reinforcement around the heel, toe and ankle, although they generally offer less protection than full boots. Waterproof motorcycle shoes are also available for riders who regularly encounter wet weather.
